Jacob Vogelman, 24, a Taglit-Birthright Israel alumnus, died while helping best friend Jessie Streich-Kest
walk her dog, Max, on Monday evening along the tree-lined streets of
Ditmas Park, Brooklyn, during Hurricane Sandy. Streich-Kest was also killed.
Three-hundred people gathered at Congregation Beth Elohim in Park Slope, New York, to remember the young man. “He was kind. He was gentle. And he left the world a richer and better
place,” Vogelman’s uncle, Rabbi Dan Sikowitz, said as family and friends
Vogelman traveled to Israel with Taglit-Birthright Israel in the Summer of 2007 as a college freshman at the University of Buffalo, where he later graduated with honors. He was
working toward a master’s degree at Brooklyn College.
He worked as a lighting and stage designer, and was working on a production slated for next week.
