Miami's Mifgash

Moving Memorial Day for Delegates of Greater Miami Jewish Federation’s Mega Mission

The 600 delegates of the Greater Miami Jewish Federation’s Mega Mission had a very unique and moving experience in Israel on Memorial Day. Coordinated by Birthright Israel, these participants attended military memorial ceremonies on four Israeli Defense Force bases – the first time that the IDF incorporated a group from abroad in an internal military ceremony. The service was conducted in both Hebrew and English and at each ceremony a Miami delegate was asked to say a few remarks.

Beforehand the delegates had been divided into small groups where each heard firsthand about the impact of Birthright Israel on soldiers. To date, 50,000 IDF soldiers have joined Birthright Israel trips as part of the Mifgash or “encounter” with Jewish peers.

“Birthright Israel is transforming the next generation from disassociation to passionate connection to Israel and their fellow Jews,” said Saby Behar, Chair of the Miami Mega Mission. “Meeting with the Mifgash was a tremendous example of how the organized Jewish Community is enhancing identity of young Jews both in Israel and around the world.”
