Our Safety Guidelines

    Updated November 24, 2015

The safety and well-being of Birthright Israel participants is our primary operating principle and our foremost concern. We provide for over 50,000 participants annually and have a well-deserved reputation for being exceedingly cautious and conservative, a reputation that we have earned in the fifteen years of our program, having brought over 500,000 participants with no security issues.

Birthright Israel is a 10 day fully supervised program where the participants travel together as a group. All standard trips are accompanied by a tour educator, two staff members, and at least one trained security guard and a medic. When needed, additional security will be provided. No effort is spared as it relates to the security of our participants, all while providing participants with a safe and positive experience during their exploration of Israel. Birthright Israel’s model of operation allows us to fully monitor and be in touch with each and every group around the country, 24/7.

Trip itineraries are approved daily with the "Situation Monitoring Room," administered by the Israel Ministry of Education, and coordinated with the I.D.F., Israel Police and other security authorities. A GPS (Global Positioning System) is carried by each group so that authorities are aware of each group's location at all times. If at any time a friction area is identified, that area is restricted for Birthright Israel groups. In addition to the Israeli government's strict security measures taken to guard public places, we take additional precautions to ensure participant safety. We do not hesitate to make any and all changes to our itineraries as needed.

Participants do not use public transportation and all trips, tour bus companies and drivers are subject to Birthright Israel’s strict standards.

Upon arrival in Israel, Your Trip Organizer will conduct an orientation which includes overall Safety & Security guidelines. The orientation and briefings will include guidelines for free time and general travel safety.

Birthright Israel works with several international airlines in order to safely bring our participants to Israel. The airlines we work with are all accredited members of the International Air Transport Association (IATA) and operate within the guidelines of their Operational Safety Audit.

Contacting participants - While trips are running, Birthright Israel operates an Information Line that is available 9 am - 5 pm EST. After office hours we have an emergency answering service to ensure that participants can be reached if needed. Each Trip Organizer will also provide participants and their families with additional contact information.
