Welcome to Shorashim. Get ready to live and experience Israel through the eyes of Israeli peers.

Shorashim is the Taglit-Birthright Israel program where groups travel for 10-days with Israelis, rather than for only part of the trip.  The Israeli participants are the brightest and most engaged people your age, who are interested both in introducing you to their country and learning more about you.

With Shorashim, learning and understanding is a two-way process, and you are a part of the educational experience as much as they are. By the end of the program, you have experienced Israel not as a tourist, but as a part of the Shorashim family.

Groups are divided generally by age and region so that you return home with an expanded social group.

To enhance your experience, Shorashim staff members are some of the most knowledgeable, passionate and fun-loving people you will ever meet. They have many years of experience. Because the staff  are program alumni, they have lived the mifgash or "encounter" experience and are well-equipped to guide your journey.

Shorashim is committed to a pluralistic Jewish experience. Shorashim reaches out to all Jews - from secular to observant. Participants teach each other about Jewish life and culture in Israel and America.

Vision Statement

Shorashim is a nonprofit educational organization devoted to building bridges between Israeli and American Jews. “Mifgash” (encounter between Americans and Israelis) is the foundation of Shorashim. Americans and Israelis travel, live and learn side by side as they explore Israel. By the end of the ten-day Taglit-Birthright Israel program, participants are forever changed. North American participants have a deeper understanding of Judaism and Israel - not only because of what they did, but as a result of the people they met.

Israeli participants are dynamic, warm, enthusiastic students and young adults. They are excited and ready to show the Americans the beauty and complexity of their country. In addition, they look forward to learning about Jewish life in America.

Shorashim is committed to a pluralistic Jewish experience and reaches out to American youth who are unaffiliated and from all Jewish denominations and to Israelis from all backgrounds.

The Trip Staff Team

Shorashim staff members are knowledgeable, passionate and fun-loving people. They have many years of experience. Because the staff are program alumni, they have lived the mifgash or "encounter" experience and are well-equipped to guide your journey. Shorashim’s staff team includes a highly qualified Israel tour educator and two staff from North America who have extensive Israel experience. Our North American staff members have often led several Taglit-Birthright Israel trips for Shorashim. For our community trips, both North American staff live in the city of the trip’s origin, attend a mandatory staff training, and are available for follow up after the experience. In addition, the staff group includes a certified medic (who also serves as a guard), and a licensed bus driver. Shorashim takes staffing extremely seriously and you can rest assured that any person who volunteers or is employed by Shorashim has been screened thoroughly.
